5 Everyday Habits That Reconnect You to the Present

In the 21st century, multitasking, and ever-connected society, being in the moment can be an all-too-easy experience to forget. We often get into a robotic mode in our daily lives—automatically reacting, and missing the moment entirely.
However, there is a solution to this. You can bring awareness back to your present by actively and intentionally practicing mindfulness of the present in your everyday habits. Once you get there, you will experience a place of peace, awareness, and intention.
To reconnect to the present, use these five easy but effective techniques to bring yourself right back to the present moment:
1. Start Your Day Without Your Phone

According to this study, the majority of people check their phones or devices the moment they wake up. When that happens, you’re putting your attention on things outside of your control, like messages, social networks, and ongoing pressures of the outside world.
Instead, give the first fifteen to twenty minutes of your awakening to complete calm. Drink warm water, stretch your body, keep silent, and set a goal for the day. With this small modification to your morning routine, mindfulness may fill your entire being.
2. Practice Mindful Breathing

Breathing keeps the mind present and reduces distractions. Whether it is resetting your attention or calming your nervous system, all it takes is stopping to take three to five deep breaths at intervals throughout the day.
You can practice mindful breathing anywhere, even when you are stuck in traffic, waiting in line, or right before a meeting. You do not need a yoga mat. It may become such an important part of your self-care practice that it is what keeps you in balance each day.
3. Savor Your Meals

Our mealtimes could get rather rushed due to our busy routine. Slowing down and taking the time to truly enjoy your meal can make an ordinary dining experience meaningful. According to this study, using phones during meals, either at home or outside, decreases the chances of mindful eating and makes you irritated.
Turn off the screens, center yourself before your meal, and notice the textures, tastes, and smells of your food. Mindful eating helps digestion while also changing everyday habits into a magical moment of awareness and appreciation.
4. Take a Daily Walk Without Distractions

A simple stroll can greatly improve your mindset and clarity of mind—and you only have to indulge in walking for 10 minutes (just don’t engage in any distractions such as music or podcasts, or scrolling while you walk).
Take note of the birds singing, feeling the air, and experiencing and listening to nature as you walk. When you incorporate this into your everyday habits, not only does your physical self become connected to the environment around you, but you can also promote mental well-being—both short- and long-term benefits. Remember: this is one of the self-care activities your can enjoy solo.
5. Reflect Before Bed

Take a few minutes at the end of each day to pause instead of letting your mind run wild about stressors or screen time. Have you ever questioned yourself? “What am I grateful for?” or “What is the lesson I learned?”
Self-reflection as part of your bedtime routine is key to your self-care practice. One way to reflect on your day and return to a place of importance is to jot it down or at least think about these questions for a few minutes. It is a way to come back to yourself in a calm manner.
Bottom Line

You can readily integrate the following five everyday habits into your daily activities with small, intentional decisions.
With these practice, you always be able to enjoy the moment and stay in the present. They will allow you to be in the present moment with every breath, pause, and second of awareness; that is where true life happens.
